starting over again

Even decades in, I still find myself starting over.

Whenever I'm in the pit, I remind myself: take one tiny step in the direction you want to go. Make it small enough that you can do it today, from exactly where you are.

The real art isn't getting it right the first time. It's learning how to begin again.

The art is in the re-starting, in getting back into it, in humbly going back to the basics.

So I started a writing group. Every Monday, we gather for an hour and write. Three weeks in, it's helping me find my voice again. I've written about stinky armpits, buying new sheets, and kids ricocheting around the house with the zoomies.

It's messy. That's what starting again looks like.

You can join us if you'd like. We're putting together the first cohort of writing club this summer.

How I write when the kids are at home.

Of course my house is a mess, that's normal.

If you’re stuck, set a ten-minute timer.

When I'm stuck, I reduce the scope. Instead of trying to finish the project, I see if I can set a timer for ten minutes and just do a tiny bit.

This week's idea:

Take one tiny step in your next right direction.
