late bloomer

Hi Reader, I was a late bloomer when it came to friendship and having a social life. Awkward in high school, quiet in college, and devoted to academics and athletics. I was a “great student,” but socially, you’d often find me studying, sleeping, or avoiding the big crowds. It took me a long time to find rooms where I felt like I belonged. Honestly, I learned things in my twenties and thirties that I wish folks had explained to me much earlier in life. There isn't a good manual for what...

selective advice

I confessed to a friend this morning that I felt disorganized, that I needed a new system. "How can I be 15 years into this and still need to reconfigure my set-up?" Sarah, she said. Your life has changed so many times. What worked ten years ago wouldn't work today. What worked even two years ago needs an update. What you need from your life and your work will flex. This shifting, editing, iterating? It's normal. This week’s idea: selective advice Not all advice is right for us. Not everyone...

starting over again

Even decades in, I still find myself starting over. Whenever I'm in the pit, I remind myself: take one tiny step in the direction you want to go. Make it small enough that you can do it today, from exactly where you are. The real art isn't getting it right the first time. It's learning how to begin again. The art is in the re-starting, in getting back into it, in humbly going back to the basics. So I started a writing group. Every Monday, we gather for an hour and write. Three weeks in, it's...

What do we care about, and why?

Sarah K Peck What games are you trying to win? I'M TRYING TO WIN SOCIAL MEDIA, BUT ALSO PARENTING, AND ALSO MY BUSINESS, WHILE WRITING A BOOK, BUT ALSO YOUTUBE, OKAY WHY AM I DROWNING? ↓ Over the last few months, I've been going to events again. After several years away, this feels like a big leap. Candidly? I was scared to go. Worried about what people might think of me (because, anxiety). Nervous to meet people. Scared that I won't know how to be on stage — it's been a while. (That turned...

The ugly duckling

Sarah K Peck She's in the wrong pond ↓ Reader, When I was little, I read The Ugly Duckling. There’s something quiet devastating about that story. The duckling isn’t actually ugly. She isn’t broken. She isn’t less capable. She’s just in the wrong pond. But when you’re in the wrong pond long enough, you can start to believe the story the world is telling about you. That you're too much, or too intense, or too ambitious. That you feel too much, you're too emotional, too awkward, too quiet, or...

Comparative suffering is a trap

Sarah K Peck No One Wins the Pain (or Joy) Olympics ↓ I’ve just spent the last few months with our newest cohort of The Wise Women’s Council, and we are already deep in the meta lessons, the leadership skills, and the growth of each person. I asked one of our members, Hannah, to write about her experience in WWC. Hannah Howard is an author of two best-selling books, a teacher, a business owner, and a mother. In December, she wrote about renegotiating her understanding of rest in a culture...

I want to work with people building, scaling, and delivering group programs — we'll be deep-diving into the structure of group programs, elevating your facilitation skills,...

The sentence that changed a friendship

Sarah K Peck Key Phrases to Navigate Hard Conversations (and Be A Good Friend) ↓ Like much of the United States, we were buried in snow this last weekend—we got around two feet! I keep thinking, so this is what it feels like to live in Minnesota, as we hit 0-degree temperatures. And then I think, “We are all part of Minnesota,” as I struggle to find better words for what’s going on in the United States right now. I know I’m not alone. That’s why today’s letter is about how we talk to each...
